Plastic Trash

Recycling is an issue that is increasing in importance.  Wearside Young Labour would like Sunderland Council to either provide public plastic and card re-cycling facilities or (which would be miles better) provide home collection of plastic and card for recycling.

Eventually we hope to see large wheelie bins for paper and card and the black box for tins, plastic and glass.  The north East is lagging behind the rest of the UK when it come to recycling and it would be great if Sunderland City Council was seen to be THE council leading the North East to a greener future.

Rage at Age Wage

One of the Labour Party's most significant achievements in government was the introduction in 1999 of the National Minimum Wage.  It has lifted millions of low paid workers and their families out of poverty and has particularly benefited women, especially those in part-time work.

But we must
go further. This month saw the introduction of legislation that makes it illegal for employers to discriminate in the workplace on the grounds of age. Yet still, young people aged 21 and under and entitled to considerably less per hour than their colleagues over 22.

Wearside Young Labour are campaigning to end this inequality and are demanding equal pay for equal work. It remains grossly unfair that 18-21 year olds are only entitled to £4.45 an hour, whilst their colleagues over 22 years old earn at least £5.35.

We'll keep you updated on developments, but if you'd like to get more involved in this campaign or have suggestions for future campaigns please
get in touch!

Lighting up the nights

Should Wearside Young Labour campaign for the return of Sunderland Illuminations?  For years Sunderland Illuminations attracted people from all over the North East and given the attraction of the Baltic and Sage in Gateshead, shouldn’t we have a festival again in Wearside, even if the event was bi-yearly?  We want your opinions and ideas!

Stamp Out Fascism

The BNP again look as if they are going to stand a candidate in every council Ward in Sunderland.  If any BNP literature comes through your door could you please post it to:

Cracking Glass

Women still hit glass ceilings in the work place.  Wearside Young Labour is working closely with the Fawcett Society to push for policies that actively reduce the gender gap.  The Fawcett Society wants women to reclaim the F-word.  Feminism has seemed to leave the political arena recently and we want to put it firmly back at the forefront of progressive policy.  Are you what a Feminist looks like?
